Essay Title: Nocturnal Nuisance: The Effect of Obesity on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Teacher: Phyllis Satz

What are you doing now?
I am currently working as a paralegal at the non-profit organization, Children’s Rights.

Where did you go to college and what was your major?
I went to Barnard College, and studied economics and human rights.

Did you continue to pursue any of the science interests you had when you took The DuPont Challenge?
I did not pursue any of the science interests in school, but I continue to be interested in public health issues dealing with obesity, particularly childhood obesity.

What were some of your favorite memories from the competition or awards trip?
I enjoyed meeting the NASA astronauts and hearing about their experiences. I also enjoyed traveling to Houston.

Do you think taking The DuPont Challenge was a meaningful experience?
It was such a great experience! I definitely think it was meaningful. Winning gave me tremendous confidence in my ability to pursue my passions.

Why would you say science writing is important?
Science writing is important because it teaches you how to organize your ideas, as well as the findings of others, and convey them in a clear manner. Even if you don’t think you’re interested in science, having good science writing skills is extremely useful.

Also, I didn’t think I would be that interested in the essay that I wrote when I first chose the topic. As I read more and more about it, however, and delved deeper into the literature, I became more interested. So science writing can keep you open-minded as well.

Do you have any advice for future entrants?
Cite all your sources! Working a little bit every day is also helpful.
